More wasted money – resurfaced road dug up within days

The Surrey Advertiser has uncovered yet more Tory incompetence and wasted council tax money. In May Surrey County Council resurfaced streets in Wood Street Village, just outside Guildford. No sooner had the workmen finished work than water company Veolia came along and dug up the new roads to do pipe work. The council have admitted that someone has made a terrible mistake – the water works were supposed to happen before the roads were repaired. They are now trying to discover who is to blame for this huge waste of money. Yet another example of the way council tax money is wasted by the shambolic county council.

Millions will have to be spent because of Tory incompetence

Tory run Surrey County Council is issuing instructions for some Surrey schools to build additional classrooms to their buildings – in Guildford Burpham Primary School has already submitted its plans and Boxgrove also plans to increase. The increases are because the birth rate in Surrey is rising, and the additional classrooms being added will cost millions of pounds. But this money is only having to be spent now because of Tory incompetence. Just a few years ago the Tories were closing schools and classrooms all over the county because they said the birth rate was faling and we had too many schools. That programme also cost millions of pounds.

So thanks to poor planning, the Tories have spent millions closing classrooms and now will have to spend millions replacing them. And who pays the bill for this incompetence? We council tax payers do, of course.

Surrey Police – private sector involvement on hold

We have previously reported on proposals for private sector companies to take over some of the work done by police officers. We are pleased to say that the proposals are now on hold – but this could be just a temporary halt. The Police Authority has called a pause only to clarify their proposals – perhaps because there is such hostility to plans to part-privatise police work across the country. It appears the Authority is trying to find a less controversial way to bring in the private sector, but people will be watching to see what they propose.

The Police Authority has been forced into this radical and risky idea because of the cuts imposed by David Cameron and Nick Clegg. Both Cameron and Clegg are very keen privatisers, and keen cutters, and that is the real danger for our local police force – the Police Authority are doing exactly the sorts of things that Cameron and Clegg demand.

NHS patients thrown out of hospitals at night

The Times as uncovered a new NHS scandal. Thanks to Tory and Lib Dem cuts. Hundreds of thousands of patients are being thrown out of hospitals in the middle of the night because there aren’t enough NHS beds.

The Tories scrapped NHS targets, because they said they weren’t needed. Now we know what that means – waiting times are increasing and the government are not checking vital targets that would stop scandals like this. Add in Cameron and Clegg’s cuts and we have a potential disaster in the offing.

Surrey NHS services privatised

A huge part of Surrey’s NHS have been privatised and will in future be run by Virgin.  Surrey Community Health provide health services in the west of Surrey, plus some county wide services. Community nurses, speech and language therapy, and sexual health services will now be run for profit. But public service union Unison said it had concerns over the privatisation of the NHS and fears of profit over care. “The services that Surrey’s million-plus population access through their GPs, including community nursing, therapies, end of life care and sexual health screening, will now be provided by a private company,” it said. Regional organiser Sarah Hayes said: “Both staff and the public do have fears over what this means for the future of the NHS. ”Unison is keen to now work with Virgin Care to ensure that quality health services for all are maintained across Surrey and to support staff in continuing to provide care and a vital service for all patients.”

Library closures illegal

The High Court has ruled that the Tories running Surrey County Council cannot replace paid and trained librarians with volunteer staff. Surrey Library Action Movement’s Lee Godfrey said “The decision by the council has been ruled unlawful and I now believe that the judge will overturn the closure decision next month.”

Labour is with you – the Tories are out of touch

 Labour is with you

Labour is changing so that we can make Britain fairer in tough times, We will take tough choices so that – even when there is less money around – we can build responsibility into our economy, stand up for the squeezed middle, and offer a decent chance to the next generation.

David Cameron’s out of touch Tory Government is making the wrong choices, damaging our children’s future, squeezing families hard and failing to stand up to powerful vested interests, They are making tough times even tougher with policies that are hurting but not working.

Labour is with you. The Tories are out of touch.

Labour will protect you and your family by delivering fairness in tough times:

  • with you in tough times: we understand how families are being squeezed, that’s why we’d stand up to the banks, the electricity companies and train operators who rip off so many hard-working people, and we would temporarily reverse the Government’s VAT rise – putting E450 back into families’ pockets.
  • with you on jobs and the economy: cetting people back to work is the best way to get the deficit down so while we’d make tough choices on tax and spending, we’d put jobs first with a five point plan including a tax on bank bonuses to fund 100,000 jobs for young people.
  • with you on our NHS: Putting patients first by stopping David Cameron’s damaging reorganisation, which is wasting billions – and using the money to save 6.000 nurses.
  • with you on cutting crime, not police: Protecting frontline policing and strong action against crime and anti-social behaviour. Cutting crime, not police officers.

The Tories are making the wrong choices for you and your family:

  • Out of touch with your family in tough times: Giving the banks a tax break, failing to stand up against rip-off firms while making life even harder for families who are feeling the squeeze due to the Tories’ VAT rise, cuts to child credit and the child benefit freeze,
  • Out of touch on jobs and the economy: The Tories’ tax rises and spending cuts which go too far and too fast have choked off the recovery and pushed up unemployment – which means they’re now set to borrow £158 billion more than they planned.
  • Out of touch on the NHS: A health service going backwards under David Cameron with longer waiting lists, a damaging reorganisation which patients and professionals don’t want, and thousands fewer nurses.
  • Out of touch on keeping our streets safe: cuts which go too far, too fast will lead to the loss of over 16,000 police officers, putting the safety of our communities at risk at a time when personal crime like theft and robbery has gone up by 11 per cent,

With you and your family in tough times

Working families are having to pay the price for the global financial crisis, Families are feeling the squeeze and parents are struggling to juggle work and family life, The Government is making tough times even tougher with policies which are hurting but not working.

From cuts to tax credits and trebling tuition fees, to failing to stand up to the energy companies and waving through excessive bank bonuses, the Tory-led Government is making life harder for squeezed families trying to do the right thing. As it becomes even more apparent that their reckless austerity plan has backfired, it’s clear that it’s hurting but it’s not working.

Labour would take the tough choices so that – even when there is less money around – we can still make Britain fairer and stand up for the squeezed middle.

Getting the deficit down means tough choices on tax, spending and pay, but Labour remains committed to fairness, responsibility at the top and the bottom, and no rewards for failure. Unlike David Cameron, we are willing to take on vested interests, like the big energy companies and train operators, to get a better deal for you and your family.

Labour is with you

  • Labour understands the cost of living crisis facing ordinary families struggling to make ends meet.
  • We’re calling on the Government to reverse the corporation tax cut for banks, and use the money to cap tuition fees at £6,000.
  • We would ensure that energy companies give those over 75 the lowest energy tariffs available – enforced by law if necessary – and would break up the big six firms’ stranglehold on the market to lower prices for most households.
  • We opposed the Tories’ decision to let train companies hike their prices by up to 6 per cent over inflation.
  • We would give financial watchdogs the teeth they need to tackle the surcharge culture among banks, pension companies, train operators and low cost airlines that make life even harder for working families.
  • Labour would temporarily reverse the Government’s VAT rise – putting f450 back into families’ pockets,

The Tories are out of touch

  • The Tory-led Government is giving the banks a tax cut while making life even harder for families feeling the squeeze.
  • The VAT rise, cuts to tax credits and the child benefit freeze are all hitting families trying to manage household budgets.
  • The Tory-led Government’s tax and benefit changes coming in from April mean an average family with children will be E5B0 a year worse off.
  • Cuts to the amount of support parents can claim for childcare are making it harder for parents to go out to work. And families now face a further tax credit bombshell in April with some losing almost f 4.000 year.
  • The Tory-led Government is trebling tuition fees to t9,000. kicking away the ladders of opportunity for our young people and saddling them with debt.
  • David Cameron has failed to stand up to vested interests like the energy companies and train operators, leaving consumers to face massive price hikes,

With you on jobs and the economy

The Tory-red Government has choked off our economic recovery – well before the recent Eurozone crisis – with tax rises and spending cuts which go too far and too fast.

As a result, prices have been pushed up and unemployment has soared, The unemployment rate is the highest since 1995, women’s unemployment is at the highest for over two decades and more than one million young people are unable to find work. The Government’s reckless plan has backfired on the deficit too. More people out of work, claiming benefits and not paying taxes, means that at their Autumn statement the Government had to admit it was set to borrow £158 billion more than planned to pay for their economic failure – and will break their promise to balance the books by 2015.

Labour will make the tough choices on tax and spending so that – even when there is less money around – we can deliver fairness.

Because the Tory-led government’s policies are failing, we are likely to inherit a deficit. We will have to make difficult choices. We would make measured cuts but we know that getting people back into work is the best way to get the deficit down.

That’s why we are calling on David Cameron to change course and adopt Labour’s five point plan for jobs, which includes a tax on bank bonuses to fund 100,000 jobs for young people.

Labour is with you

  •  Labour will make the tough choices on tax and spending so that – even when there is less money around – we can deliver fairness.
  • Getting people back to work is the best way to get the deficit down so Labour would tax bank bonuses to fund 100,000 jobs for young people.
  • We’d temporarily reverse the Government’s VAT rise to kick-start the economy – this would put £450 back in families’ pockets.
  • We’re calling for a one year cut in VAT for home improvements and national insurance tax breaks for small firms that take on new workers.
  • And we need to bring forward long-term investment projects to get people back to work and strengthen our economy.
  • Re-write the rules of our economy to ensure responsibility at the top and bottom of society.

The Tories are out of touch

  •  The Tories’ tax rises and spending cuts which go too far and too fast have choked off the recovery and pushed up unemployment
  • The Tory led Government is now set to borrow £158 billion more than it planned to pay for economic failure and a bigger benefits bill. High unemployment means more people on the dole and fewer paying tax.
  • More than one million young people are unable to find a job, yet the Tory-led Government scrapped Labour’s Future Jobs Fund and their welfare to work Programmes are now in chaos.
  • The Tories are giving the banks a tax cut at the same time as waving through irresponsible bonuses in the taxpayer-backed banks.
  • David Cameron’s government is failing to stand up to the powerful vested interests which got our economy in so much difficulty in the first place and which are now ripping off hard-working people

With you on our NHS

David Cameron claimed the NHS was safe under the Tories but his out of touch government is taking it backwards – making the wrong choices for you and your family.

He is wasting billions on a damaging reorganisation – opposed by thousands of patients, doctors and nurses – that will do nothing for patient care and that he promised wouldn’t happen. lnstead of putting patients first, David Cameron is cutting 6,000 nursing posts.

Already there are 3.500 fewer nurses since the General Election with the number set to fall by 6.000 by the end of this Parliament, More people have waited longer for treatment, longer for tests and longer in A&E.

Labour would put patients first, protect the frontline and support the right kind of reforms needed to address the long term challenges facing the NHS.

Instead of wasting billions on a damaging and unnecessary reorganisation, we would save this money and protect the jobs of 6,000 nurses.

Labour is with you

  •  Putting patients first.
  • Protecting 6.000 nursing jobs.
  • Fighting to stop billions being wasted on a reckless and damaging top-down reorganisation.
  • Backing the real reforms needed to improve the NHS like integrating social care so we can deal with an ageing population.

The Tories are out of touch

  • 3,500 nursing posts cut since the election, and 6,000 set to be cut by 2015.
  • More patients waiting longer for operations and in A&E.
  • A damaging reorganisation, opposed by health professionals, which will do nothing for patient care – after David Cameron promised no more top-down reorganisations.
  • Distracting from the real reforms needed to make the NHS fit for the future,

With you on cutting crime, not police

David Cameron is making Z0 per cent cuts to policing and taking big risks with the safety of our communities, These front-loaded cuts go too far, too fast and will lead to the loss of over 16,000 police officers,

In the first year of the Tory-led Government 9 out of 10 police officers lost were from the frontline because of the scale of the government’s cuts – blowing apart Tory and Lib Dem promises that they would protect frontline police services. Personal crime, including theft, robbery and violence, has gone up by 11 per cent over the last year – the steepest rise for over a decade, David Cameron is out of touch with communities – cutting police officers not cutting crime.

Labour will stand up for local communities. We would protect police numbers and implement strong action against crime and anti-social behaviour to keep you and your family safe. We would have had to make tough choices, but with Labour’s plans for a 12 per cent cut to the police budget the number of police officers and frontline services could be protected,

Labour is with you

  • Labour would protect frontline policing.
  • We will back neighbourhood policing and strong action against crime and anti-social behaviour.
  • We want to keep police on the beat because that’s the best way of keeping our communities safe.
  • Labour would spend money on keeping police on the beat, not on bringing in elected Police and Crime Commissioners.

The Tories are out of touch

  • David Cameron’s huge 20 per cent cuts to the police will lead to the loss of over 16,000 officers by the next election, putting the safety of our communities at risk.
  • In the first year of the Tory-led Government 9 out of 10 police officers lost were from the frontline because of the scale of the government’s cuts.
  • Personal crime, including theft, robbery and violence, has gone up by 11 per cent over the last year – the steepest rise for over a decade.
  • The Tories are ending ASBOs, making it harder for communities to install CCTV and restricting the use of DNA evidence, making it harder to fight crime.
  • The Tory-led government is spending over £100m on bringing in elected Police and Crime Commissioners, the equivalent of over 3,000 new police constables. Labour would spend this money on keeping police on the beat.

With you in Surrey

Across the country, Labour Councils are making tough but fair choices to protect families and frontline services.

Local councils are facing cuts which go too far, too fast, These cuts impact on services we all rely on – children’s centres, libraries, social care, street cleaning, road maintenance, and waste collection,

But Labour councillors are fighting to protect frontline services and keep people in work – supporting businesses and local economic recovery. Difficult choices have to be made – all councils are having to find savings – but Labour will make the tough choices to ensure that we can still deliver fairness even when there is less money around,

Labour is deeply rooted in communities and in the needs and priorities of families. We know that people are feeling the squeeze on their standard of living and their finances, That’s why Labour councillors will always stand up for fairness and put your family first.

Labour is with you

  •  Labour councils cost you less. On average council tax payers in Labour controlled areas pay less than those in Tory-led areas.
  • Facing deep cuts to their funding, which go too far and too fast, Labour councils are taking tough choices to protect families and communities.
  • Labour councils across the country are delivering fairness in tough times, taking action to protect the vital local services people rely on.

The Tories are out of touch

  • Tory councils cost you more. On average council tax payers in Labour-controlled areas pay less than those in Tory-led areas.
  • Tory councils are making the wrong choices for you and your family – they are making tough times even tougher with policies that are hurting but not working,

Toll roads coming to Surrey soon?

The day before David Cameron and Nick Clegg privatise and break up the NHS, they drop another bombshell that will cost us all more money and give their business friends huge profits at our expense. David Cameron has said that he wants private companies to improve busy motorways and trunk roads – but he is going to hand the roads over to the companies and allow them to charge tolls.

This incredible move has been condemned by the AA, RAC and transport charities. They all say that it will lead to more tolls on our roads. But there is also doubt that the scheme will work and it may even make congestion worse, as drivers leave motorways to avoid tolls and go on smaller roads instead. And once tolls are charged, they will just go up and up – the M6 toll motorway in the West Midlands has seen eight price rises in the tolls charges in 9 years.

And with some of the busiest roads and motorways in the country, could Surrey be one of the first places to have new toll roads? Labour rejected road pricing as unfair – but Nick Clegg and David Cameron want to charge us more to use the roads as well as putting up the tax on petrol.

Lib Dems and Tories – voting together to destroy the NHS

So despite all the talk of the Lib Dems being a “progressive” party, their peers and Mps have walked through voting lobbies to break up and privatise the NHS. David Cameron said there would be no major shakeups of the NHS, and then privatised it. The Lib Dems said they opposed NHS cuts and would protect the NHS, then voted to cut budgets and privatise the NHS instead. Both parties will pay the price for their lies over the NHS.

And what makes it even worse is that some of the big private companies lining up to carve up the NHS are also using loopholes and offshore companies to dodge tax – using tax havens to pay little or no tax. See more details here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2012/mar/17/nhs-shakeup-health-firms-tax-havens

Lib Dems – privatising the NHS

Some Liberal Democrats have talked about privatising the NHS for years – they wrote about it in the famous Orange Book.

Now Nick Clegg and almost all of his MPs keep voting with David Cameron, supporting the Tory plans to break up the NHS and privatise it. Now one Sunday newspaper has revealed that the Lib Dem party has received £1 MILLION in donations from C&C Alpha Group, a company that runs private hospitals. The company say the donations are because they support Lib Dem policies and have nothing to do with the NHS changes. But that is no surprise is it? After all, the company runs private hospitals and Lib Dem MPs keep voting to hand over more of the NHS to private companies. It’s no wonder they like Lib Dem policies!
